Athens

Athens is rightfully considered the historical capital of Europe. Throughout its long history it has been occupied by multiple conquerors leaving their cultural marks, making Athens a fascinating melting-pot of cultures and ideas. Over the centuries, the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and in the two centuries since, it has become an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm.

From ancient temples to Roman arches and from Byzantine churches to modern architectural wonders, Athens is a metropolis where history and the present coexist in harmony. Walk where Aristotle, Plato and Pericles once walked; admire the frescoes in one of the many Byzantine churches; take your espresso with Acropolis in the background or visit the newly built Acropolis museum. Then brave the climb up the sacred rock of Acropolis and visit the symbol of the city, the Parthenon, that still stands after two millennia, defying the corrosive forces of time.  The view of Athens from this vantage point will take your breath away.

Athens also boasts a vibrant art scene with countless art galleries, museums and antique shops that are definitely worth a visit. For those who want to delight their palates there are a great number of gourmet restaurants that can accommodate a variety taste preferences.  There is also a burgeoning wine-tasting industry beginning to rival the more traditional Italian and French wines for the attention of the wine tasting experts. For those who enjoy the night life, Athens is the place to be with many exciting places where young and the ‘not-so-young’ people have the time of their lives.
