Visit the ancient city of Mytilene
The ancient city of Mytilene is the capital of Lesvos island and is home to several historical and archaeological sites, including the ancient theater and the Mytilene Castle. You can also explore the Folklore Museum of Mytilene, which showcases the island’s rich cultural heritage.
Throughout the agora or shopping market you will see ancient ruins from throughout the ages. There are museums and galleries just outside the city center that are very much worth your visit. An entire day can be spent in the capital easily!
Explore the Petrified Forest at Sigri
The Petrified Forest of Lesvos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the largest and most important fossilized forests in the world.
You can explore the forest’s unique landscapes and learn about the island’s geological history. It is located in the far north west of the island and the village of Sigri also hosts a wonderful Petrified Forest Museum as well as shops and tavernas along the sea.


Take a dip in the hot springs of Eftalou
The Eftalou hot springs are located on the northern coast of Lesvos and are known for their therapeutic properties. Visitors come from around Europe and the world and can take a dip in the warm waters and enjoy the beautiful views of the Aegean Sea.
There are also thermal springs located outside of Mytilene on Gera Bay that you can spend time at after a day of shopping and exploring in the city center.
Visit the village of Molyvos
Molyvos is a traditional village located on the northern coast of Lesvos and is known for its well-preserved medieval castle and its traditional architecture and stone laid streets. Take your time to explore the village’s local markets and enjoy a meal at one of the many local tavernas.
Sunset is an absolutely gorgeous time to be in Molyvos so an evening drink or dinner is a perfect way to end your time in the hilltop village.


Explore the beaches of Lesvos
The island is known for its beautiful beaches, including the famous Eresos beach, which is a popular spot for swimming and sunbathing. There are other beaches like the Agios Isidoros, Sigri and Agios Ermogenis, where you can enjoy a relaxing swim. Wherever you stay on the island, there won’t be a fabulous beach too far from you! It needs to be mentioned that a big part of the island has “blue flag” awarded beaches.
In order to receive a Blue Flag eco-label, a beach must not only be found to have an excellent water quality, it must comply with a total of 33 criteria , concerning cleanliness, environmental management and awareness, various amenities and services, information, visitor safety and protection of the coastal area.
Try the local food
Lesvos is known for its delicious and hearty cuisine that is heavily influenced by the Mediterranean and the Middle Eastern flavors, which is based on fresh seafood and locally grown ingredients.
You must try traditional dishes such as moussaka, dolmades, fava and souvlaki at local tavernas and also taste the famous ouzo, a traditional Greek anise-flavored liqueur. Lesvos is also known for its delicious cheeses such as the traditional graviera, which is a hard cheese similar to Parmesan, and the soft cheese known as ladotyri, which is made from sheep’s milk.
