Day 1 - Touchdown in Thessaloniki
Our first stop is the White Tower, an emblem of Thessaloniki with a bloody story to tell. Once known as the “Red Tower”, it took on a new life thanks to a Jewish prisoner named Nathan Guidili. He offered to paint the tower white in exchange for his release, an attempt by the Ottomans to whitewash its brutal past away.
On the way back, we will pass close by what used to be two ghetto areas in German-occupied Salonika of 1942. We will stop by Plateia Eleftherias, where in the same year, 9,000 Jewish men were ordered to assemble for forced labor. This event was a precursor to the mass deportation to Auschwitz of the flourishing Jewish community of Thessaloniki that began the following year. Remnants of this devastating history will lead us through the city on our walking tour, offering a poignant reflection on the past.
We’ll wrap up the day in a cozy taverna, reflecting on the day’s revelations over a hearty Greek meal. It’s a chance to digest not just the flavors, but the profound history we’ve walked through, setting the stage for the incredible journey ahead…

EXCELLENT Based on 21 reviews LauraJanuary 8, 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Vielen Dank, liebe Efi, ευχαριστώ πολύ! Melissa LesterOctober 28, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Wow! Efi and her team at Definitely Greece are amazing!! They kind, thoughtful, engaging, fun to spend time with, and meticulously planned the trip of a lifetime for us after meeting a few times to get to know our love of history, mythology, art, food, beautiful views, beaches, and getting to know the culture of where we are traveling. We had private tours of Athens and the Acropolis with a surprise addition of a play at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. We explored the beautiful beaches and cities of Paros. Watched breathtaking views of the sunset over the caldera in Santorini, where we also enjoyed a visit to a symposium on the history of Greek music, and a private wine tour with a sommelier. We visited The Temple of Apollo - once considered the center of the world - where the Oracle of Delphi once shared her predictions. We briefly visited Corninth and Napfelion that also included private tours where we learned the history of these ancient cities. And the food... There was so much unbelievably good food and wine often with a spectacular view. I could go on and on about this trip. But what made it even more special was how amazing Efi and everyone on her team was. We miss them already, and can't wait to go back. I highly recommend working with Definitely Greece if you want the trip of a lifetime catered specifically for you! Vanna PilgrimOctober 24, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Efi was the most amazing tour guide we could have possibly imagined. We were referred through a mutual friend when planning a trip to Greece and hoping to fit in bucket list items while still having an authentic and relaxed feeling vacation (full of amazing food) and she checked every box. She exceeded our expectations and made every moment of the trip so special, unique and catered to our specific needs every step of the way. She truly became like family by the end! Highly recommend booking with her and get ready to have the trip of a lifetime. Chiara Rosa VelazcoSeptember 5, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Efi is incredibly warm and helpful. She is really knowledgeable about all things Greece, and you can tell how much experience she has planning trips just by talking to her. Also, her English is really good so you will have no trouble communicating whatsoever. Pushpa IAugust 30, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Efi Kalagirou, is an amazing friendly person to talk to. She was kind enough to advise on my requirements something, that not lot people do these days. I would definitely consider her advise and give it a go to Greece🙂 thanks Efi for taking out your time. Karen KalergisAugust 3, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What started as an inquiry about travel ended with an amazing experience fulfilling my dream to explore my family's roots in Greece. Efi did research for me that was comprehensive, and connected me with a historian who did a custom tour for me at the National Museum. Definitely Greece is definitely the place to start and stay with for an amazing exploration of Greece! She is the best at making dreams come true! Wayne T SmithJuly 4, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Efi and Defiantly Greece, arranged a lifetime experience for us traveling through Greece. She went above and beyond our expectations to make our trip memorable and so special. Firstly, she listened to our ideas in order to build a custom itinerary around our travel preferences (good food, the main tourist attractions, and especially the small non-tourist towns). Then booked all our internal travel (by plane, ferry, and car), accommodation, and booked or suggested restaurants. She was even our personal guide and driver for Athens to Thessaloniki. Special note: she really does know the special, little out of the way places that we enjoyed so much. And the two specialist tourist guides she booked for us for the Acropolis and Delphi were very good. Part historian, trip planner and tour guide, she’s also personal, very professional, well informed and organized. And just as important to us: she’s caring, fun to be around, with a keen sense of humour. She takes care of business too; always available with quick responses during the planning stages and leading up to the trip. Efi is also able to be flexible on the day when it comes to the everyday itinerary, something we did more than once; when we did, or didn’t want to do something. Fond memories of our trip that will last a lifetime. Thanks to Efi and her team. Wayne and Moana Geoffrey BlockJune 13, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We had just the best experience possible with Efi! She went out of her way to give us a whirlwind adventure for 2 days and spent so much time making sure we did the kinds of things we enjoy. She met us at our hotel when we arrived and arranged everything from there! Really unique tours and such a warm, caring, thoughtful person who was so easy to spend time with. We cannot recommend Efi strongly enough. Genevieve AbseyJanuary 10, 2024Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I cannot say enough good things about Efi and the service she provides. I had never used a travel agent before reaching out to Efi, and I immediately felt a kinship with her and knew we would be taken care of. She listened intently to the kind of trip we were hoping to have during our 10 days in Greece, and orchestrated an experience for us that was beyond anything we ever could have done on our own. She’s like the grand maestro of travel! From planning private tours of the Acropolis and Delphi with the most knowledgeable and engaging tour guides, to day trips through side streets and cafes of smaller villages and lesser known historical sites, to seamlessly handling transfers to and from airports and hotels, to advising us on the best things to do and places to visit on our own. The list goes on and on. Everything that Efi had a hand in exceeded our hopes and expectations and had a personal touch that we could not have achieved otherwise. Not the mention the fact that I would go back to Greece just to spend time with Efi, she is gracious and curious and funny and incredibly sharp, but maybe that’s besides the point 😂 After having the great fortune of getting to work with Efi, I trust her implicitly, and urge anyone visiting Greece to hire her to make it a one-of-a-kind experience for you.Showing our latest reviews
