Brunch may not come from a Greek word but it is Greek approved! Brunch (n.): a meal eaten in the late morning that is a combination of breakfast and lunch.

The brunch philosophy is highly popular nowadays. Thessaloniki makes no exception in this matter as well. There are plenty of places offering delicious brunch menus, accompanied by aromatic coffees and healthy juices. We visited, tested and chose the best brunch spots in Thessaloniki for you to have the best time ever in the city!

Estrella – World Street Food

Estrella is a major player when it comes to brunch. Nowadays, there are many Estrella stores in Greece, but the original one, the one that opened first (proudly present!) is the one at 48 Pavlou Mela Street in Thessaloniki. It tends to be busy all day, so you may not find a free table straight away. But give it a second try, it is worth the effort!

Estrella got famous and went viral by one dish on its menu: Bougatsan. A delicious combination of croissant and bougatsa custard cream that you should definitely try if you get the chance. But Estrella has far more than that! There are a plethora of pancakes on offer served with chocolate, fruits, eggs, bacon, and so many other sweet and savory options. Are these too many calories for you? Estrella’s menu also offers healthier brunch choices such as salads, sandwiches and oat bowls.

  • Must-try: The traditional koulouri (bagel) of Thessaloniki, which is stuffed with an omelet, feta cheese sauce, bacon, and handmade pink mayonnaise. If you prefer sweets more, then you should try the traditional tsoureki of Thessaloniki filled with double chocolate and tahini cream. Tahini is sesame seed cream and and a healthier version of peanut butter, which all the cool kids like nowadays.

Just find the nearest Estrella store and start ordering!

Canteen

Canteen is an all-day restaurant with a passion for good food! Its brunch menu is exceptional with many options for you to find the appropriate dish. It was awarded in 2019 as the second-best all-day Restaurant, and as the best all-day restaurant in Thessaloniki, by Michael Cacoyannis Foundation. The thing that has made Canteen one of the best places for brunch in Thessaloniki is that you can enjoy your brunch all day long. Specifically, every day it serves brunch from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm and on Sundays until 7.00 pm, for the animal parties of Saturday night.

Its menu consists of all the delicious things a brunch should have: pancakes, sandwiches, eggs, and desserts. The dishes are so tempting that is hard to decide which one to take. We suggest starting with a savory dish, such as eggs cooked anyway and end your brunch with a sweet pancake, topped with praline and berries.

There are many drinking options to accompany your brunch, as well. Of course, there is coffee! If you are a coffee addict like me, you can understand me (currently sipping my third cup of espresso for today!). You can choose between espresso, Greek frappe, and Greek traditional coffee. If you are not addicted to caffeine, then you can choose a healthy smoothie or fresh juice. Whatever you decide, it will be perfect for sure.

    The Garden Bar

In one of the most beautiful and picturesque streets of Thessaloniki, Agiou Mina street, is located a magical and colourful urban garden, the Garden Bar. Its philosophy is based on positive vibes and a green atmosphere. Garden Bar is an all-day bar with great coffee, refreshing cocktails and interesting lunch options.

During the morning there is a breakfast buffet with Greek traditional and international breakfast options. If you are no morning person then you should choose one of the brunch dishes of its menu. The offer of sweet and savory dishes make it extremely hard to choose just one of them.

Must-try: Kayanas Eggs is the one that got our attention on the menu. A piece of crunchy focaccia bread is topped with fresh tomato sauce, small pieces of green bell peppers, smoked bacon and crumbled feta cheese. This homemade recipe is an epitome of Greece, with tomato and feta cheese being the main ingredients.
